MODの製作者ゲイリー・ニューマンさんが新たにプログラムしたのは罠となるコード。この小さな罠により、海賊版をプレイするとエラーメッセージが表示されるようになります。そのエラーは「Unable to shape polygon normals（ポリゴンノーマルを形成できません）」というもの。

実装直後からSteamのフォーラムでは「こんなエラーが出てきちゃったよ」という不正使用者からの助けを求める声がたくさんでてきました。ニューマンさん自身も「だれかポリゴンノーマル形成エラー出た人いる？」とツイートして不正使用者を釣っています。

また、このエラーと共に数字の羅列も表示される様になっているのですが、これは実はエラーとは関係ない数字。その数字はなんとユーザーのSteam IDでした！

ということで、ニューマンさんの仕掛けた罠にまんまと引っかかった不正使用者たちはSteamの持つ正規購入者のIDリストと照らし合わされ、取り締まられたとのことです。
