１９５７年の番組開始当初は５人分だったが、核家族化の進行で６５年から４人分に減ったという。その後も実態に合わないとの理由で、何度か見直しが議論されたが、一家だんらんのイメージが損なわれるとの意見が根強く、見送られていた。今後は２人分を基本にしながら、料理に応じて柔軟に対応する。
